1950s ranch with interesting non-typical existing features including a high vaulted Living Room, attic Bedroom, dormers and a full basement [with less than 7'-6” ceiling height]. Mostly open First Floor was no doubt not the original layout. The parents' bedroom was in the basement. This project adds a Master Suite above a Lounge above a basement addition of a Gear Room. Beside the Lounge two and a half feet lower, there is a decent Mud Room Entry, that convenes the Gear Room and Laundry below via a stairway. The existing basement stair and existing Grand[ish] Stair from the Living Room to Attic Bedroom were left in place, as was the quirky dual access Half-Bath. Since the Attic Bedroom is fairly large and conducive to two beds on opposite sides of a large gable dormer, it was decided the two young children could continue to share the room for now, and one or both might choose to move into the basement a few years later. The Master Suite is well-sized and appointed and placed where it has great daylight access and presence. The addition and the original house look nothing alike, and those differences are celebrated.
